STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 14 Iowa State scored the final nine points of its contest against No. 22 Oklahoma State Wednesday night, with Dustin Hogue's corner 3-pointer with 1:11 remaining putting the Cyclones ahead for good as ISU knocked off the Cowboys 70-65 at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The win moves Iowa State to 19-6 overall and into sole possession of second in the Big 12 at 9-4. Oklahoma State falls to 17-9 overall, 7-7 in conference competition.
Jameel McKay recorded his first career double-double, tying a career high with 17 points and recording a career-best 14 rebounds. Hogue's go-ahead 3-pointer gave him 14 points on the evening. Iowa State won for the second consecutive year in Stillwater, the first time the Cyclones have won back-to-back at OSU since 1972-74, when ISU won three-straight seasons under the guidance of Maury John.
How it Happened
The Cyclones took the lead on a pair of Jameel McKay free throws to make it 10-9. Iowa State was able to find early success in the post, with McKay racking up eight points and Dustin Hogue posting a team-high nine first-half points. The duo helped give Iowa State an 18-to-4 advantage in the paint in the first 20 minutes. Their contributions became more critical as ISU were without the services of its two leading scorers, Georges Niang and Bryce Dejean-Jones, for most of the first half due to foul trouble.
McKay and Abdel Nader eventually joined Niang and Dejean-Jones on the ISU bench with two fouls, opening the door for Oklahoma State to close ISU's lead, which got as large as seven points. The Cowboys finished the first frame on a 5-0 run as the Cyclones didn't get on the scoreboard in the final three minutes. OSU secured a tie game headed into the locker room when Phil Forte made a pair of free throws with 21 seconds left.
The Cowboys was on the board first in the second half via a Michael Cobbins free throw, but Niang was able to break his duck with a left-wing 3-pointer to get the Cyclones back ahead 36-34. The 3-pointer by Niang allowed Iowa State to go on a 7-0 run to expand its lead back to six points at 40-34. The Cowboys would not go away, as they chipped away and eventually re-took the lead, again via Cobbins at the charity stripe to make it 47-46 OSU.
A fourth foul saw Niang go to the bench with 11:42 to go. However, the Cyclones were able to battle on without their leading scorer as McKay continued to get to the line and convert. A nifty Monté Morris pass set-up a Dejean-Jones tip-in alley-oop to cap a 7-0 run to make it 54-51 Cyclones. The pendulum would continue to swing as Okie State got the lead back temporarily via a Tavarius Shine 3-ball, but Morris restored the ISU advantage with an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it 57-56 ISU. That lead lasted a little over a minute as Le'Bryan Nash put Okie State back ahead at the line, before Morris returned the Cyclones to the front at the stripe the next possession at 61-60.
The scoreboard would go unchanged for over a minute, as both teams failed to capitalize on opportunities. With 3:42 left, Nash hit a fadeaway jumper to get the Cowboys ahead 62-61. The Cyclones would not take advantages to pull OSU back in at the line and Nash made Iowa State pay with another fadeaway jumper to make it 65-61 Cowboys. A Niang put-back made it a two-point game and then Hogue swung it back in ISU's favor with a corner 3 in front of the ISU bench to make it 66-65 Cyclones with 1:11 to go.
After a travel call against Nash, ISU took advantage of an opportunity to run down the clock. With the shot clock running down, Niang drove and went off-glass to give ISU a three-point lead, 68-65, with 20.9 seconds left. On OSU's next possession, Jeff Newberry got a look from the left wing, but it rimmed off into the hands of McKay. The junior closed out his 13-of-18 night from the charity stripe with a pair of makes to close out the 70-65 victory.
