LAWRENCE, Kan. – In her final dual meet as a Cyclone, senior Amanda Paulson achieved a significant career milestone, cementing her legacy as the most dominant sprint freestyler in Iowa State history. With a victory in her signature event, the 50-yard freestyle, Paulson notched career win No. 100 in the Cardinal and Gold.
Paulson's win total includes relay and individual events, as well as dual and championship meets.
“Amanda has always handled herself with such grace,” Iowa State assistant head coach Kelly Nordell said of Paulson following the meet, “It's unparalleled what she's done.”
The Jayhawks got off to a strong start, taking the first four events, but Iowa State was able to steal the momentum, taking three of the final four races. After eight events, Kansas will take a 94-56 lead into day-two of the meet in the Robinson Natatorium.
“Well we've dug ourselves a pretty big hole,” Iowa State head coach Duane Sorenson said. “Hopefully we can come back, swim with some pride and compete a lot better on our second day of the meet.”
In addition to Paulson's win, sophomore Julie Dickinson and freshman Kasey Roberts took first-place for Iowa State in the three-meter diving and 100 breaststroke events, respectively. Dickinson's score of 308.63 on the three-meter board moves her to fifth on Iowa State's all-time top-20 performers list.
Dickinson has now recorded two first-place finishes on the season and has placed second or better in at least one event in her last four meets. With a win for Roberts, the standout newcomer has at least one first-place finish in every meet on the 2014-15 season.
