NORMAN, Okla. – The No. 14 Iowa State men's basketball team dropped a high-scoring affair against No. 17 Oklahoma, 94-83 Monday night at the Lloyd Noble Center. The loss drops ISU to 17-6 overall, 7-4 in Big 12 play. The Sooners are 17-7 overall and 8-4 in conference competition.
Dustin Hogue led four Cyclones in double figures with a season-high 19 points.
How it Happened
After an even first few minutes the Cyclones got some separation as a couple of 3-pointers from Dustin Hogue. The Cyclones were hot from deep, making five of their first eight 3-pointers. However, the Sooners were also stroking it from deep, making three of its first five. OU tied it back up with nine minutes to go in the first half with a 3-pointer from Frank Booker to make it 24-24. ISU got back ahead with back-to-back-to-back treys by Hogue and two from Naz Long to build back up a 35-28 lead.
The high-scoring roll of the Cyclones continued throughout the first half as a Georges Niang 3-ball got the Cyclones a double-digits advantage at 40-30. However, the Sooners fought back from a 42-32 deficit to run off a 14-4 run with Buddy Heild hitting a transition 3-ball to tie the game 46-46 with 33 seconds left to make the game a deadlock heading into the second 20 minutes.
OU stormed out to a 6-0 run to begin the second half, as the Cyclones missed two shots and had two turnovers while the Sooners went 3-of-4 from the field to get out to a 52-46 lead. It was Hogue again who stepped up from deep with his fourth 3-pointer of the contest to get ISU onto the board in the second half.
That was as good as it got for the Cyclones, who could not keep up with the white-hot Sooners, who went 19-of-33 from the field in the second 20 minutes. Oklahoma rode the momentum to build up a lead of as much as 20 points as OU put the game out of Iowa State's reach in the final minutes.
