AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (7-10, 2-4 Big 12) fell to No. 7 Baylor (19-4, 5-0 Big 12) on Sunday at home, 4-0.
“We were in a couple matches, I feel like we competed alright,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We were very competitive in the first sets in singles. Baylor was able to play the important points a little bit better and they came out with the first sets and they gained some confidence from there. The ones that we were in it were very competitive, the second sets went a lot faster. The experience of Baylor being in that situation over and over, it pays off.”
Baylor earned the doubles point over the Cyclones with victories at the No. 2 and 3 spots. Senior Meghan Cassens and junior Ana Gasparovic fell 6-1 to Leolia JeanJean and Kely Putri. Senior Caroline Andersen and junior Alejandra Galvis also fell to Blair Shankle and Theresa Van Zyl with the same score.
In singles, Galvis broke an eight-win singles streak, falling to No. 99-ranked Leolia JeanJean, 7-5, 6-0. The loss was her first since playing Oklahoma in the inaugural conference match of the season, and the Colombia native is now 11-3 in dual singles play.
“We were in it,” Espinosa said about Galvis' match. “We were right there with the girl and she kept sticking to her game. She played some important points just a little bit more defensively and those points seemed to be the most important ones and we weren't able to come back from there.”
The Cyclones' next matches will be April 10 at TCU and April 12 at Texas Tech.
“Hopefully the weather will cooperate because we're going to go to Texas and we'll try to get outside as much as we can,” Espinosa said. “We'll rest our bodies a little bit. For the most part we'll be outside in the month of April, so we're going to be working a little bit more on conditioning and staying outside a little bit longer.”
