Cyclones fall to Wyoming, beat UMKC in Des Moines

DES MOINES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team went 1-1 on Saturday in a double header in Des Moines. The Cyclones (4-6, 0-0 Big 12) had a full day on the courts, resulting in a tough 4-3 loss to Wyoming and a redeeming win over UMKC, 4-0.

After losing the doubles point to Wyoming, the Cyclones fought back in singles with three wins from seniors Ksenia Pronina and Meghan Cassens, and junior Alejandra Galvis. At 3-3, an ISU win was in the hands of senior Caroline Andersen, who struggled in three sets against Christa Gecheva. Andersen won the first set, but fell after a comeback from Gecheva, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4.

The Cyclones bounced back in a big way over UMKC, clinching the match without a single opponent victory. Sweeping doubles, ISU earned the point and went into singles with a huge push. Sophomore Sami Budai earned a win at No. 1 singles over Dimitra Stavrianakou, 6-1, 6-1. Cassens came through at No. 3 singles shortly after with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Marina Albert. Senior Ksenia Pronina clinched the Cyclones' fourth win of the season with a win over Maddie Schulte, 6-2, 6-2.

Iowa State will return to the courts on Friday the 13th, taking on their second Big 12 opponent of the season in West Virginia. The match will begin at Noon at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center
