AMES, Iowa -- Iowa State beat Oklahoma State after letting in three runs in the first inning, defeating the Cowgirls 5-3. It wasn't until the sixth where ISU took control of the game and created four runs to win. The Cyclones beat the Cowgirls 5-3 and ISU is now ranked 20-17 with a 1-5 Big 12 play, OSU ranks 19-22, 3-6 conference mark.
The Cyclones finished with one win and one loss of 8-6 in today's doubleheader. In the second game, Brittany Gomez kept the Cyclones alive with a triple that brought a run home. After three innings where neither team crossed home plate ISU started hitting doubles which lead to four runs. With those offensive plays, complimented with Stacy Roggentien's pitching, the Cyclones defeated the Cowgirls.
Game Two: Iowa State 5 Oklahoma State 3
For the second game running, Oklahoma State got runs on the board early and often, as the Cowgirls ran Katie Johnson out of the game with three quick runs, though one was aided by an error by the Cyclone defense. With the bases loaded and one out, ISU called on Stacy Roggentien to get out of the jam and, for the first of many times Saturday, she bailed ISU out with the first of her five strikeouts and a pop up.
However, the ISU offense didn't get the bats going until the bottom of the third, when Jorden Spendlove became the first ISU baserunner of the game with a single up the middle. The Cyclones caught a break when Nychole Antillon's sacrifice bunt almost became a double play, saved by an OSU throwing error. That set the stage for Brittany Gomez two batters later, who smoked a triple to right-center, reducing the Cowgirl lead to 3-1.
The ISU offense struggled to get the offense cranked up again, but Roggentien kept the ship steady keeping Oklahoma State off the base paths altogether, at one time retiring nine consecutive Cowgirls to keep the door open for ISU.
The Cyclone offense finally went through the door in the bottom of the sixth, as an infield single by Gomez gave Aly Cappaert the opportunity to cut the lead in half with one swing of the bat, a double to left-center. Cappaert's pinch runner, Kaila Konz, became the tying run as Maddie Reese fired a single to right, with Konz sliding around the tag of Dre McKee.
Kelsey McFarland kept the Cyclone roll going, as she delivered a double over Mallory Collins in left to put ISU ahead. After a gutsy steal of third by McFarland, Jorden Spendlove gave ISU some extra cushion with an RBI-single down the right-field line to make it 5-3. In the end, Roggentien only needed the one run, as she retired the top of the OSU order in succession to give ISU its first Big 12 win of the season.
Roggentien was brilliant, pitching 6.2 innings of three-hit ball, only walking one and striking out five. Gomez, McFarland and Spendlove all had two-hit games, with Gomez's two hits moving her into second in Iowa State history with 199 career hits.
Game One: Oklahoma State 8 Iowa State 6
The first game saw more first-inning woes for the Cyclones as RBI-scoring plays from Michaela Patton, Danielle Riddle and Randee O'Donnell gave the Cowgirls a 4-0 edge before the Cyclones stepped up to the plate.
ISU wasted no time getting back into the contest, as a Brittany Gomez infield single and a Cathlin Bingham walk gave Aly Cappaert another run-scoring possibility. She brought everyone home as she blasted her fourth home run of the season over the wall in left to make it 4-3 Cowgirls.
ISU stuck with Brianna Weilbacher in the circle, and the move was not a disappointed as Weilbacher settled into the game, especially after getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the second. Keeping OSU off the board gave ISU an avenue to get ahead in the bottom of the third, loading the bases with no outs. Two batters later, Maddie Reese made the big play, knocking a 2-RBI single to right to put Iowa State ahead 5-4.
Oklahoma State bounced back by taking advantage of a Reese error at second to tie it at 5-5 in the fourth. Then, with one swing of the bat, Riddle put the Cowgirls back ahead, taking a 3-run home run over the wall in left to make it 8-5 OSU.
The Cyclones made a two-out rally in the sixth, as hits by Sammie Hildreth and Gomez led to a Bingham double to cut one run out of the lead. Cappaert drew a walk to set the stage for Lexi Slater, but the Cyclone shortstop could only manage a groundout to second and OSU was out of the jam and home free for the win.
Gomez led ISU at the plate, going 3-for-4 while Bingham, Cappaert and Hildreth each had two-hit games.
