AMES, Iowa – The Cyclone Gridiron Club spring football game showcased a balanced offensive and defensive effort on Saturday in Jack Trice Stadium, featuring 676 yards offensively and 40 points scored in the spring debut. A total of 7,500 Cyclone fans attended the game.
As in year's past, this contest was not short on offensive power, as both teams combined for four touchdowns, four field goals and 676 yards of total offense. On the defensive side, 11 different Cyclones combined for six sacks, 13 pass breakups, two quarterback hurries and two interceptions.
Quarterback Grant Rohach led the Cyclones through the air, going 13-of-18 for 186 yards and one touchdown. Quarterback Sam B Richardson went 11-of-23 for 145 yards and one touchdown, while quarterback Joel Lanning went 11-of-27 for 125 yards. Four different Cyclones totaled 490 yards passing. Sophomore wide receiver Trever Ryen finished with six catches for 146 yards to lead the Cyclone receivers.
On the ground, freshman running back Clifford Kwaw-Mensah led Iowa State with 50 yards on 12 carries. Junior running back Mitchell Harger had 13 carries for 42 yards with a long of 12 yards. Iowa State tallied 186 rushing yards split between eight different rushers.
Offensive Game Ball Goes To...
Trever Ryen. The sophomore wide receiver out of Ida Grove, Iowa tallied four catches for 91 yards in just the first quarter. Ryen caught two passes for over 40 yards from Rohach. Ryen's signature moment came in the third quarter when he caught a 49-yard pass and took it to the house for a touchdown. Ryen finished the game with six catches for 146 yards and one touchdown.
Rohach was also stellar on offense, as the junior quarterback went 7-of-10 for 102 yards in the first quarter alone. The Moorpark, Calif. native finished the game with 186 total yards, which was the most of any Cyclone quarterback on the afternoon.
Defensive Game Ball Goes To...
Darian Cotton and Kamari Cotton-Moya. Both Cotton and Cotton-Moya recorded interceptions on the afternoon, with Cotton taking his 55-yards to paydirt for the first touchdown of the game. Cotton also added five tackles, while Cotton-Moya added two solo tackles.
Senior defensive back Sam E Richardson recorded two pass breakups and five tackles, while freshman linebacker Willie Harvey led all Cyclones with six solo tackles and seven overall.
