Cyclones Fall to No. 10 Oklahoma State, 4-0

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team fell 4-0 to No. 10 Oklahoma State in the first of two weekend home matches.

“For a team that's top-10 in the country, we fought, we were very competitive in certain spots,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “But they're very good. They were able to gather themselves and play hard and came out and won the important points.”

The Cowgirls took the lead early, clinching the doubles point. Senior Meghan Cassens and junior Ana Gasparovic fell to Katarina Adamovic and Vladica Babic, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles. Sophomore Samantha Budai and senior Ksenia Pronina were defeated at No. 1 doubles, 6-2, to clinch the point for Oklahoma State.

“We were competitive, and it was a good strep in the right direction going toward the Big 12 Championships,” Espinosa said.

The first singles losses came at No. 4 and No. 5 back-to-back, putting Oklahoma State up 3-0 and ready to clinch the match. At No. 4, Alejandra Galvis fell to Vladica Babic, 6-2, 6-3. At No. 5, Natalie Phippen struggled against Karyn Guttormsen, falling 6-4, 6-4. The deciding point came at No. 1, with No. 15-ranked Viktoriya Lushkova taking down Budai, 6-4, 6-4.

“I was pretty happy with singles and as long as we can compete like that it will be alright [moving forward],” Espinosa said.

ISU will take on Augustana (S.D.) on Saturday at home for senior day, with expected rain bringing the match to Ames Racquet and Fitness Center at 4 p.m. Each of the three seniors will be honored prior to the start of the match.
