AMES, Iowa – Iowa State volleyball assistant coach
Jon Newman-Gonchar will serve as an assistant coach for the USA Volleyball Women's National Team at the XIV Women's Pan American Cup from June 13-21 in Lima, Peru.
The Pan American Cup is a 12-team tournament with squads competing for spots at the 2016 FIVB World Grand Prix. The United States were winners in 2012 and 2013 and has finished in the top three each of the past five seasons, finishing second to the Dominican Republic in 2014. The team will be led by head coach David Hunt, who is an assistant coach at Pepperdine, while the other assistant coach is Nicole Lawlor of Volleyball Pensacola.
Newman-Gonchar, who will be in his third season as an assistant coach at Iowa State in 2015, has worked with USA Volleyball on multiple occasions in the past, including stints at the High Performance A1 Select Camp, the U.S. Junior National Team and the U.S. A2 Team.
During his time at Iowa State, Newman-Gonchar has made an impact on the Cyclones both on the court and in recruiting. On the court, he has coached Iowa State's middle blockers, overseeing Tenisha Matlock's run to earning All-Big 12 Honorable Mention in 2013. Last season, freshman
Alexis Conaway had one of the best freshman seasons in Iowa State history in the middle, earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 and being named to the All-Big 12 Freshman Team.
As recruiting coordinator, Newman-Gonchar has helped bring in many impact freshmen to the Iowa State program. The 2015 season will see Iowa State welcome one of its best freshman classes in program history, which was ranked No. 8 in the country by PrepVolleyball.com last week. The class features a trio of top-35 recruits. Newman-Gonchar was also instrumental in bringing in ISU's first international recruit in
Grace Lazard, who will make her debut for ISU in August.
Newman-Gonchar and Team USA start the Pan American Cup on June 13 against Puerto Rico, its first of five matches in five consecutive days.
