AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team will make a pair of national TV appearances in 2015, the Big 12 announced Thursday. The Cyclones' Sept. 30 match at Oklahoma and ISU's Oct. 28 home match against Kansas will both be shown on ESPNU, with both matches slated for 6 p.m. start times.
Both matches will give the national audience a chance to watch rematches of dramatic, five-set matches from 2014. The Cyclones picked up a season sweep of the Sooners in 2014, but it was the match in Norman that featured the most drama. After dropping the first set 25-23, the Cyclones outlasted Oklahoma 30-28 in a second frame. After the Sooners got the third 25-23, ISU fought back to take the fourth 25-21 and dominated the fifth 15-9 to earn the five-set win.
Alexis Conaway had one of the best matches of her freshman campaign, posting a career-high 15 kills at a career-best .560 hitting percentage and eight block assists. Morgan Kuhrt had 16 kills, including three in a row in the fifth set to move ISU ahead for good. 2015 Big 12 Preseason Co-Player of the Year Kierra Holst of Oklahoma finished the match with 32 kills.
ISU's match against Kansas at Hilton Coliseum in 2014, which was also shown on ESPNU, saw the sides exchange dominant first sets, with Kansas taking the first 25-18 and ISU the second 25-16. The Cyclones kept it rolling in the third en route to a 25-17 set win, but KU bounced back with a 25-21 set victory to force a fifth set.
The Cyclones flew out to an early lead in the fifth set, but Kansas battled back to tie the set at 8-8. Then came the rally of the season, as the ball crossed the net 17 times before Victoria Hurtt fired a kill that put the Cyclones ahead for good and to a 15-12 fifth-set victory.
Caitlin Nolan tied the Big 12 record and set an Iowa State record with 43 digs for the match, while Ciara Capezio led the Cyclone offense with 16 kills.
With the national TV selections made, Iowa State can also confirm that all the other 2015 home matches will be shown on Cyclones.TV Powered by Mediacom and the Cyclones.TV web player. This season's Cyclones.TV lineup includes a pair of matches against top-five teams in the AVCA Preseason Poll in No. 3 Texas (Nov. 14) and No. 5 Nebraska (Sept. 19). Other notable Cyclones.TV matches include contests against 2014 NCAA Championship participants Dayton (Aug. 28), Marquette (Aug. 29), Kansas State (Oct. 7) and Oklahoma (Oct. 31), and the in-state showdown against UNI (Sept. 16).
