The Cyclones enter the 2015 season after making its ninth-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Volleyball Championship. Iowa State finished 2013 with an 19-10 record, and tied for second in the Big 12 with an 10-6 mark.
Iowa State returns five starters from last year's team, led by 2014 AVCA Third Team All-American Caitlin Nolan. A senior and unanimous Preseason All-Big 12 selection, Nolan led ISU and ranked fifth in the NCAA with an ISU and Big 12-record 5.74 digs per set. Nolan went on to also claim the Big 12 Libero of the Year award, the seventh-straight season ISU has featured the Libero of the Year.
Other starters back for Iowa State include senior right side and 2013 AVCA Honorable Mention All-American Mackenzie Bigbee, junior outside hitter Ciara Capezio and middle blocker Alexis Conaway, a 2014 Big 12 All-Freshman Team choice. The Cyclones also return both setters from last year in junior Suzanne Horner and sophomore Monique Harris.
The scrimmage will also give fans the opportunity to see Iowa State's highly-touted freshman class in action for the first time. The sextet, ranked as the No. 8 recruiting class in the country by PrepVolleyball.com, features a trio of top-35 recruits ISU fans will get to see for the first time in setter Remi Bowman, outside hitter Jess Schaben and right side Hannah Bailey. Making their first appearances at Hilton will also be a pair of in-state defensive specialists in Hali Hillegas and Abby Phillips.
Cyclone fans will also get another opportunity to see freshman middle blocker Grace Lazard, ISU's first international student-athlete under head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch. Lazard, from London, enrolled at Iowa State in January and participated in spring practice and competition, and did summer school at ISU.
The Cyclones regular season home opener will be Friday, Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m. when the Cyclones host Dayton as part of the Cyclone Invitational. The match will be the first of three for ISU on the weekend, as Iowa State has a Saturday doubleheader against North Dakota (1:30 p.m.) and Marquette (6:30 p.m.).
