AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team made its first appearance of the 2015 season at Hilton Coliseum with the Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday. For two hours, the No. 21 Cyclones put on a great show for the fans, with an eye on the season opener Friday against Dayton 6:30 p.m.
Sixteen of the 17 members of the Cyclone squad saw action in the four-set match. Head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch's Cardinal squad took three of the four sets over associate head coach Dawn Sullivan's Gold squad.
The fans got the chance to see two debuts. The first was of the sextet of freshmen who will hope to feature for the Cyclones in 2015. The group all had their moments as the fans were pleased to see newcomers Hannah Bailey, Remi Bowman, Hali Hillegas, Grace Lazard, Abby Phillips and Jess Schaben, the No. 8 recruiting class in the country according to PrepVolleyball.com.
The other new feature fans were able to see in action was the replay challenge system. In 2015, the Big Ten, Pac-12 and Big 12 will all be conducting replay challenge systems on an experimental basis. ISU rolled the system out to test-run during the Scrimmage. Johnson-Lynch and Sullivan challenged four calls, mostly involving touches at the net of a ball or a player being in the net. All four challenges resulted in overthrown calls.
The Scrimmage also gave fans their one opportunity of the season to see volunteer assistant coach Joe Lynch in action. However, the 2015 scrimmage did not see the best performance by Lynch, at outside hitter this year after a run at setter the past few years. Lynch finished with three kills, but also four errors on 23 swings. He did contribute an assist and two block assists on the afternoon.
No. 21 Iowa State will kick off the first weekend of the season at home by hosting the Cyclone Invitational. ISU's first match will be Friday at 6:30 p.m. against Dayton. The Cyclones follow that up on Saturday with a pair of matches against North Dakota at 1:30 p.m. and Marquette at 6:30 p.m.
