The No. 1-ranked Iowa State women's cross country team started out the 2015 season with a convincing first-place finish at the Hawkeye Early Bird Invitational in Iowa City on Friday.
Head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough's squad boasted the top four finishers, led by freshman Evelyne Guay. The Oakville, Ontario, native impressed in the first collegiate cross country meet of her career, crossing the finish line in 10:31.1. Guay redshirted her initial cross country season in 2014 prior to competing for the Cyclones in both indoor and outdoor track.
Guay was followed closely by ISU's Katherine DeSimone, who took second in 10:15.3. Sophomore Maryn Lowry (3rd – 10:19.6) and senior Andrea Toppin (4th - 10:21.3) rounded out the Iowa State quartet at the front of the field.
A second freshman in Kelly Naumann rounded out the ISU scoring effort with an impressive 7th-place finish (10:37.1) in her collegiate cross country debut.
The Cyclones finished with just 17 team points, placing all five scoring runners in the top-10. The five Iowa State scorers finished with a spread of just 24 seconds.
In team competition, No. 1 Iowa State won the meet with 17 team points. They were followed by Illinois State (2nd – 62 points), Iowa (3rd – 65 points) and UNI (4th – 85 points).

The Cyclone women return to action on Friday, September 11 at the Oz Memorial in Minneapolis, Minn. The race is sete for 7 p.m. CT.
