MADISON, Wisconsin - The No. 14 Iowa State men's cross country team took on a field that included 19 nationally-ranked programs at Friday's Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational and came away with an eighth-place team finish.
A conservative start for the Cyclones found the team sitting in 24th place at the first checkpoint, a quarter of the way through the 8,000-meter race. The story of the day was the ability of the Iowa State runners to navigate up through the field in order to capture a top-10 finish at what FloTrack named 2016's strongest regular season cross country meet
Senior newcomer Kevyn Hoyos, a graduate transfer from Syracuse, led the way for Iowa State in his second meet of the season. Hoyos finished 21st while clocking a 24:19.7. He was followed shortly after by redshirt freshman Thomas Pollard, who took 25th in a time of 24:23.4. Pollard was one of just two freshmen to be among the race's top-30 finishers.
Next across the finish line was sophomore Joseph Andrews, who finished 52nd with a time of 24:37.6. Another freshman, Andrew Jordan, was ISU's fourth finisher, placing 65th in 24:46.8. Junior Toby Hardwick was there to round out the Cyclone scoring effort with a 97th-place finish in 25:00.4
Sophomore John Nownes (115th – 25:09.6) and freshman Sam Clausnitzer (144th – 25:25.2) also put forth strong efforts for the Cyclones at Zimmer Championship Course on Friday.
