AUSTIN, Texas – Powered by a 21-point third quarter, Texas defeated Iowa State 27-6 Saturday night at Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium. The loss drops ISU to 1-6 on the year and 0-4 in Big 12 competition, while Texas moves up to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the league.
Iowa State got the first six points of the game on the board via a pair of Cole Netten field goals, but the Longhorn defense stepped up to restrict the Cyclones to 280 yards of total offense while posting eight sacks.
Keys of the Game
ISU kept its first scoring drive alive with Joel Lanning finding Allen Lazard for a 30-yard pass-and-catch, which eventually led to a Cole Netten 39-yard field goal and a 3-0 ISU lead. The Cyclones quickly got the ball back via a Willie Harvey fumble recovery, and tacked on another Netten three-pointer, this one from 25 yards to double the advantage to 6-0.
The defensive struggle continued into the second quarter, with both teams struggling to sustain drives. Texas was able to cut the ISU lead in half heading into the break with a 21-yard field goal from Trent Domingue. A 47-yard Kene Nwangwu kickoff return and a quick 20-yard connection between Jacob Park and Deshaunte Jones gave ISU one more chance to get on the board, but Netten's 50-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left.
The Texas offense rode the end-of-half momentum to begin the third, as Shane Buechele found a wide-open Jerrod Heard for a 37-yard TD catch to give Texas a 10-6 lead. The UT defense stuffed the Cyclones on fourth down, and four plays later made it 17-6 when Buechele found Devin Duvernay for a 75-yard score. UT got its third touchdown of the third quarter with 53 seconds left when D'Onta Foreman powered in from 18 yards out.
