AMES, Iowa – Iowa State rode another strong offensive effort to sweep Texas Tech 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-15) Saturday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. The season-high crowd of 3,620 saw ISU improve to 10-8 on the year, and 2-4 in Big 12 play. TTU is now 10-12 overall and 0-7 in league competition.
ISU hit .374 as a team, with Jess Schaben leading the way with 10 kills at a .455 hitting percentage. Hali Hillegas led the back row with 21 digs, her seventh-straight match in double figures, to help restrict Tech to a .081 hitting percentage.
Iowa State Rolls to First Set Victory
Iowa State led the whole way in the first set, running out to an 8-2 advantage via a pair of Jess Schaben kills. The Red Raiders were only able to bring the deficit down to four at 9-5 ISU before the Cyclone offense picked it up again. Aces from Ciara Capezio and Suzanne Horner helped balloon the lead to as many as 11 points at 21-10. The Cyclone block stepped up to bring ISU home, with Grace Lazard racking up a couple of stuffs late on in the frame. Iowa State closed out the set when Sarah Redding's back-row attack was stuff by Alexis Conaway make it 25-13 Cyclones.
Late Run Gives ISU Set Two
The Red Raiders were able to stick with the Cyclones for a little longer, keeping the deficit within a couple of points early on. Iowa State made a 5-1 run to get ahead 15-8 at the media timeout, but Tech went on a 3-0 run out of the break to reduce the Cyclone advantage to 15-11. TTU was able to cut the Cyclone advantage to three at 17-14, but that was the last point of the set for the visitors. Iowa State ran off the final eight points of the frame, which included three kills and two blocks from Grace Lazard. The British middle and Schaben combined to stuff Lauren Douglass to claim the set 25-14.
11-1 Run Leads Iowa State to Sweep
Texas Tech saw the lead for the first time in the match in the early portions of the frame. The ISU offense struggled to respond, making five attack errors with only one coming via a Red Raider block. TTU was ahead at 12-11 before the Cyclones got ahead for good on a 4-0 run that was powered by some strong Horner serving. After Tech got a sideout, Branen Berta came in and served up a 7-0 run that included six ISU kills, three from Capezio. Iowa State wrapped up the match when Victoria Hinneburg's shot sailed wide at 25-15.
Cyclone Notes
*Alexis Conaway posted two solo blocks, tying her career-high previously attained against Northern Illinois in 2014.
*Jess Schaben led all players with 10 kills, her 10th match of the season in double figures and 29th of her career. Schaben has had at least 10 kills in all six Big 12 matches in 2016.
*Hali Hillegas posted 21 digs, her seventh-straight match in double figures and eighth of the season. She has had at least 10 digs in all six of ISU's Big 12 matches this season.
*Hillegas' 21 digs was the first time a Cyclone has had 20 or more digs in a three-set match since Caitlin Nolan had 29 against UNI last season.
