LUBBOCK, Texas - The No. 13 Iowa State men's cross country team finished second at the Big 12 Championship on Saturday at Rawls Golf Course in Lubbock, Texas. It was the program's highest finish at the conference meet since placing second in 2013.
The Iowa State men grabbed four All-Big 12 honors, as Thomas Pollard, Josef Andrews, Andrew Jordan and Kevyn Hoyos all finished in the top 15, marking the most All-Big 12 performers in program history. Iowa State's 49 points are also the lowest point-total at the Big 12 meet in school history.
It was a conservative start to the race, as the Cyclones reached the 1.7k checkpoint in eighth place in a tightly-packed field. ISU continued to move its way up through the field, but was still in fifth at the 5k mark. However, it was not long until the Cardinal & Gold made their move and was on the heels of No. 9 Oklahoma State, which came into the race as heavy favorites.
Pollard, a redshirt freshman, was the first Cyclone across the finish line, placing fourth in 25:39.8 in his postseason debut. Pollard's fourth-place performance is Iowa State's best individual finish at the Big 12 Championship since Philemon Too also took fourth in 1998.
Andrews, a sophomore, was the eighth runner to complete the 6k, clocking a time of 25:45.9. Jordan, a freshman, followed right behind to take ninth in 25:51.1. The trio were the only freshman or sophomore runners in the entire field to place in the top 10, as the bright future of Iowa State cross country was on full display.
Senior Kevyn Hoyos also grabbed All-Big 12 honors, as the Carrollton, Texas native, finished 12th in 25:56.0. Toby Hardwick wrapped up the Cyclone scoring effort, as he clocked a 26:02.2 to finish 16th.
Sophomore Dan Curts was just behind Hardwick, taking 18th in 26:05.1, followed by John Nownes in 26th with a time of 26:21.3. Freshman Sam Clausnitzer also ran very strong, finishing 33rd with a time of 26:34.3 in perhaps the best performance of his young Cyclone career.
