AMES, Iowa - The Big 12 Conference announced its 2016 Academic All-Big 12 cross country teams this afternoon, honoring 15 Iowa State student-athletes. The 15 ISU honorees were tied for the most in the league with Oklahoma State. Five Cyclones were recognized for achieving 4.0 GPA's, more than any other school in the Big 12.
Dan Curts (RSo., Kinesiology & Health), John Nownes (So., Aerospace Engineering) and Thomas Pollard (RFr., Pre-Business & Statistics) garnered First-Team academic recognition while Josef Andrews (RSo., Liberal Studies) was a Second-Team honoree. Pollard was one of just four men's Academic All-Big 12 honorees with a 4.0 GPA.
On the women's side, 11 Cyclones were named to the All-Big 12 First Team to lead all women's teams in the conference. Bethanie Brown (RJr., Communication Studies), Abby Caldwell (RSo., Finance), Anne Frisbie (So., Graphic Design), Evelyne Guay (RSo., Kinesiology & Health), Erin Hooker (Jr., Journalism & Mass Communications), Maryn Lowry (Sr., Kinesiology & Health), Kelly Naumann (So., Community & Regional Planning), Perez Rotich (Sr., Environmental Science), Megan Schott (RFr., Community & Regional Planning), Jasmine Staebler (RFr., Management) and Erinn Stenman-Fahey (RFr., Marketing) all represented the Cardinal & Gold.
Brown, Guay, Staebler and Stenman-Fahey were all nominated with 4.0 GPAs.
A total of 44 student-athletes were honored on the men's team, while 70 student-athletes make up the women's team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA while the second team selections hold a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
