LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to collect Matt Campbell's first Big 12 win as Iowa State's head coach with a 31-24 victory over Kansas on Saturday. The Cyclones got a breakout performance from freshman running back David Montgomery, who went for career-highs of 169 yards on 24 carries in the come-from-behind victory.
Iowa State moves to 2-8 overall and 1-6 in the Big 12 with the win, while Kansas falls to 1-9 and 0-7 in conference play.
Keys of the Game
Special teams got the Cyclones on the board in the early going, as De'Monte Ruth recovered a fumbled punt return less than two minutes into the game, setting Iowa State up deep in KU territory. Place kicker Cole Netten converted on the drive with a 23-yard field goal to give Iowa State a 3-0 lead.
Kansas would take hold of the momentum from there, scoring touchdowns on back-to-back drives late in the opening quarter. A Taylor Martin one-yard rushing score on the first play of the second stanza gave the Jayhawks a 14-3 lead.
Iowa State answered back with a 14-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a four-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Park to Allen Lazard, cutting the deficit to 14-10. Lazard had four catches for 56 yards on the possession.
Following a Kansas field goal to open the second half, the Cyclones put together a 75-yard touchdown drive. Park found freshman Deshaunte Jones for a 15-yard touchdown pass that looked like it would tie the game. However, Netten's extra point attempt was no good, and KU remained in front 17-16.
The two teams traded scoring drives to close the third quarter, including a six-yard touchdown run by Mitchell Harger to cut the Kansas lead to 24-22. Trever Ryen was stopped short of the goal line on the two-point conversion attempt as KU preserved its lead heading into the fourth stanza.
Iowa State took its first lead of the day on its ensuing offensive possession, highlighted by a 46-yard run by Montgomery to set the Cyclones up with first and goal. Quarterback Joel Lanning found pay-dirt two plays later with a one-yard touchdown run to give ISU a 28-24 advantage.
The Cyclone defense made a crucial fourth-down stop on the following Kansas possession to kill a Jayhawk drive in ISU territory. Iowa State took advantage with a drive that took 5:33 off the clock and ended with a 37-yard field goal by Cole Netten to take a 31-24 lead.
Jomal Wiltz picked off Kansas quarterback Carter Stanley on the next possession with 2:08 left on the game clock and the Cyclones went into victory formation to collect Matt Campbell's first Big 12 win as Iowa State's head coach.
