AMES, Iowa – Iowa State pulled to within a touchdown in the fourth quarter but No. 12 Oklahoma answered with a field goal and went on to defeat the Cyclones, 34-24, Thursday night at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones fall to 1-8 overall and 0-6 in Big 12 play, while Oklahoma improves to 7-2 overall and 6-0 in conference action.
Keys of the Game
Iowa State took a 17-14 lead with 4:30 left in the second quarter on a 41-yard run by Joel Lanning on fourth-and-2, but Oklahoma responded with a pair of scores to end the half and go into the break leading 28-17.
Baker Mayfield connected with Dede Westbrook for 65 yards on the first play of the ensuing possession and the Cyclones were forced to punt on their next possession. The Sooners then marched down the field quickly, moving 75 yards in nine plays and 2:26, as Mayfield found Dimitri Flowers from 11 yards out with six seconds left in the half.
The Cyclone defense held OU to just six points in the second half on a pair of Austin Seibert field goals, but the offense was able to reach the end zone just once, a 23-yard reception by Dondre Daley from Jacob Park to trim the lead to 31-24.
Oklahoma answered the score with a field goal and forced a Cyclone turnover on downs to clinch the win.
Players of Note...
Allen Lazard had six receptions for 76 yards, including a 31-yard touchdown reception early in the second quarter.
Park was 16-for-29 for 160 yards and two touchdown passes in his first start as a Cyclone. Freshman David Montgomery had a good first half for ISU, rushing for 44 yards on 10 carries before an injury sidelined him for the remainder of the game. Lanning finished with 61 yards on seven carries.
Senior kicker Cole Netten made a 28-yard field goal and three extra points to become Iowa State's all-time leading scorer with 269 points.
The Cyclone defense racked up eight tackles for a loss, including two by Jhaustin Thomas. Thomas also had his first career interception in the game. Willie Harvey finished with a team-high nine tackles, including one sack.
