AMES, Iowa – Iowa State defeated Sioux Falls, 101-57 on Sunday evening, in its only exhibition game prior to opening the 2016-17 season. ISU was led to victory by 24 points from senior Nazareth Mitrou-Long and a 3-point barrage from the hot-shooting Cyclones.
How it happened…
The Cyclones closed the opening stanza on a 14-0 run over a four-minute span and raced out to a 56-18 halftime lead behind nine 3-pointers. Five players had six points or more in the first half, led by 18 from senior Nazareth Mitrou-Long. Iowa State forced 10 turnovers and held the Cougars to 7-of-33 (21.2 percent) shooting from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Iowa State continued to roll after the intermission, led by 12 points from freshman Solomon Young off the bench. In total, nine Cyclones scored in the second half alone, as ISU continued to extend its lead behind a tremendous shooting performance. The Cyclones ended the game 15-of-26 from beyond the arc.
ISU ended the game with 22 assists to just 10 turnovers on the evening.
Players of Note...
Mitrou-Long led the way with a game-high 24 points on 9-of-14 shooting, including 6-of-10 from beyond the 3-point line. It was the senior's first game back on the floor in Hilton Coliseum after taking a medical redshirt in 2015-16.
Deonte Burton poured in 16 points of his own, to go with nine rebounds, four assists and one show-stopping dunk in the second half that put an exclamation point on the victory.
Matt Thomas had 13 points, while making 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc.
Freshman Solomon Young had a strong debut in his first game in the Cardinal & Gold, coming off the bench to provide 12 points and four rebounds in 12 minutes of action.
Sioux Falls was paced by Mack Johnson's 12 points.
