AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-2) defeated Delaware State (1-8), 88-57, at Hilton Coliseum on Sunday afternoon behind a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds from senior guard Seanna Johnson.
Johnson did all her damage on 9-of-16 shooting while logging just 27 minutes of playing time, as all 13 available Cyclones saw action against Hornets. Iowa State controlled the glass throughout the game, and owned a 59-31 rebounding marking, including 23 offensive boards. The ISU offense racked up 24 assists on 27 made baskets, led by seven helpers for senior Jadda Buckley.
How it Happened
Coming off a career-high 31-point outing a week ago against Northern Illinois, sophomore Bridget Carleton picked up right where she left off in the first quarter against Delaware State. Carleton buried four 3-pointers in the game's first two minutes, as the Cyclones would eventually race out to a 14-1 advantage. ISU would cool down, shooting 2-of-15 in the closing minutes of first quarter, but still led 28-15 after one thanks to a perfect 8-of-8 shooting from the free throw line.
Iowa State continued to draw fouls and get to the charity stripe in the second quarter, making 10 free throws on 12 attempts. ISU's continued aggression in getting to the foul line remedied a quarter in which the Cyclones made just 5 field goals. By the halftime intermission, Iowa State had extended its lead to 50-30 behind 16 from Carleton and 11 points each from Buckley and Johnson.
Johnson really got going after the intermission. Following an efficient but quiet opening half, the senior guard exploded for 14 points in the third quarter, including a buzzer-beating three to close out the stanza. Iowa State extended its lead to 74-42 in the quarter, while holding Delaware State to just 4-of-15 shooting from the field.
The Iowa State bench crew played nearly the entirety of the final quarter, as the Cyclones went on to an 88-57 victory.
