AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Georges Niang has been named a United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) Second-Team All-American, announced today by the organization. He is the fifth player in ISU history to earn All-America honors from the USBWA.
Niang leads the Cyclones with 19.8 points, while also grabbing a career-best 6.2 rebounds. He is the only player in the nation, and the first since Creighton's Doug McDermott in 2013-14, to average 19 points and six rebounds, while shooting 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free-throw line.
Niang has scored in double figures in all 32 games, including 14 games with 20 or more points.
The Methuen, Massachusetts, native, is third on Iowa State's scoring list with 2,142 points and he is the only player in school history with 2,000 points, 600 rebounds and 400 assists.
Niang was recently named to the Wooden Award Final Ballot for the second time in his career. He also earned Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors after scoring 31 points in a quarterfinal loss against Oklahoma last week.
Niang and the Cyclones return to action Thursday against Iona in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The game will tip at 1 p.m. (CDT) in Denver, Colo.
