HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Iowa State volleyball team showed it could hang with one of the top teams in the country Friday evening at Hawaii. The start of the 2016 spring season saw the Cyclones lose three of four sets to the Rainbow Wahine, but take one. The line score read 19-25, 11-25, 22-25, 25-23.
ISU got good production out of its middles, with Alexis Conaway and Samara West each posting 10 kills, with Conaway getting hers at a .409 hitting percentage and West at .318. Morgan Kuhrt led the Iowa State offense with 13 kills at a .346 hitting percentage. Abby Phillips took over the role at libero, and finished with 28 digs. Hali Hillegas recorded 10 digs on the night.
The first set saw ISU able to recover from a pair of three-point deficits, but after the Cyclones got it to 14-13 'Bows on a Kuhrt kill, the Wahine ran off five in a row to get ahead 19-13 and take control of the first en route to a 25-19 win. Hawaii did not have a big run in set two that separated itself, it was its 91 percent sideout rate that separated itself from the Cyclones and earned themselves a 25-11 second frame win.
Hawaii racked up a 15-10 lead in the third set, but Iowa State worked its way back into the set, with Kuhrt getting three kills en route to tying it at 17-17. However, ISU was never able to get the lead, forcing ties at 18-18, 19-19, 20-20 and 21-21, but never getting ahead as the 'Bows took the third 25-22.
Iowa State was rewarded for its efforts in the fourth. Down 13-9, Kuhrt served ISU on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 14-13 on an attack error by McKenna Granato. The Cyclones and Rainbow Warriors had a combined 15 ties in set four, the final coming at 23-23. ISU earned the first set point via a Grace Lazard kill, and the visitors pounced on their chance, with Monique Harris and West teaming up to deny Casey Castillo and to take the fourth 25-23.
