MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Iowa State tennis team went on the road and picked up a Big 12 win, defeating West Virginia, 4-2, Saturday afternoon. The win, Iowa State's fourth consecutive against the Mountaineers, improved the Cyclones to 13-4 overall and 1-2 in Big 12 action. West Virginia falls to 6-7 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
With the win, Iowa State clinched its first winning season since the 1986-87 season.
The Cyclones earned the doubles point, winning at the No. 1 and No. 2 slots.
Samantha Budai and Liza Buss breezed to a 6-1 win over their counterparts Carolina Lewis and Paula Goetz. After WVU took the win at No. 3 doubles, Alejandra Galvis and Anabella Bonadonna held off Yvon Martinez and Habiba Shaker, 7-5, to clinch the always important doubles point.
In singles action, WVU jumped back in front with a pair of wins at No. 1 and No. 4 before Galvis righted the ship for the Cyclones with a 6-2, 7-6 win against Goetz. That turned the tables back in favor of the Cyclones as ISU also won at No. 2 and No. 5 to clinch the match. The freshman Buss won a three-setter, 6-0, 3-6, 7-5, against Lewis and Bonadonna beat Kaja Mrgole, 6-2, 6-4, as the Cyclones picked up their first conference win of the young seaons.
The Cyclones return to action in two weekends when they face Kansas State on April 8 and Kansas on April 10 in Ames.
