AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (14-5, 2-3 Big 12) fell to the No. 34 Kansas Jayhawks (13-5, 3-2 Big 12), 4-2, Sunday afternoon at the Forker Tennis Courts. The loss gave the Cyclones a split on the weekend after disposing of Kansas State Friday in Ames.
The Cyclones started off ahead in doubles due to an unorthodox start. One of the Kansas' athletes was unable to compete due to illness. Iowa State only needed one of the two other doubles pairings to win to clinch the doubles point. The pairing of Annabella Bonadonna and Alejandra Galvis defeated Anastasiya Rychagova and Smith Hinto, 6-3.
Iowa State is 9-1 on the season when they win the doubles point, but the momentum from doubles did not carry over today. The Jayhawks marched back in doubles to win all four singles matches. The No. 95 ranked singles player in the nation, Anastasiya Rychagova, defeated Samantha Budai, 6-1, 6-2. Claudia Toledo got the only singles win by forfeit.
The Cyclones will compete again next weekend when they travel to Texas to take on the Baylor Bears on Friday at 5:00 p.m. and the Texas Longhorns on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
