AMES, Iowa – Cyclone fans will have a wonderful opportunity to watch head football coach
Matt Campbell and his new staff for the first time this weekend at the annual Cyclone Gridiron Club Spring, April 16 in Jack Trice Stadium.
Competition is instrumental for the development of a football team, that's why Campbell is a proponent of a spring game. It's also the reason Campbell decided to have a split team for this weekend's intra-squad event, dividing the roster into a “Cardinal” and “Gold” squad.
Campbell and his staff drafted the teams on Wednesday to ensure a competitive scrimmage.
“I always liked to have a competitive environment for a spring game,” Campbell said. “I want to compete as much as we can right now so we can get our kids to understand how to win.”
For a handful of Cyclones, Saturday will be their initial chance to play in front of Cyclone fans in Jack Trice Stadium. Redshirt freshmen
Julian Good-Jones,
Marcel Spears Jr.,
Hakeem Butler and
Bobby McMillen III, just to name a few, can get their first taste of the Cyclone gameday atmosphere.
“What I love about the spring game is that a lot of our guys haven't gotten the chance to play in Jack Trice Stadium,” Campbell said. “We have a great environment and what an opportunity for them to play on the field, in front of our fans.”
The first half will consist of two 15-minute quarters with normal clock stoppage. The second half will have two 15-minute quarters with a running clock.
New this year is a tradition Campbell hopes to establish for future spring games is honorary coaches. Campbell personally invited back some of the biggest names in Cyclone football history to serve as honorary coaches for this weekend's scrimmage.
Cyclone legends A.J. Klein, Seneca Wallace, Sage Rosenfels, Keith Sims, Dennis Gibson, Tom Randall, Matt Blair and Carter Bykowski will all be returning to Ames.
Remembering the tradition of Cyclone football is a top priority for Campbell.
“This is really important for me, and something want to continue to do as long as I am here,” Campbell said.
Saturday's game, which kicks off at 1 p.m., and is free for the public, will have a number of
activities for fans.
