AMES, Iowa – Iowa State ushered in the Matt Campbell era Saturday afternoon with the Cyclone Gridiron Club Spring Game at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cardinal team used a fourth-quarter touchdown to defeat the Gold team, 10-6, in front of one of the largest crowds to watch an Iowa State spring game (15,089).
The defense was stout all afternoon, keeping the shorthanded offensive units out of the end zone on all but one occasion. The offense was playing without starters Jake Campos, Allen Lazard and Mike Warren, while Campbell got all players on the field to play in front of the Cyclone faithful.
The difference in the game came on a 47-yard strike from redshirt junior Joel Lanning to Dondre Daley early in the fourth quarter.
Lanning finished the game 11-for-19 for 161 yards. Mitchell Harger led both teams with 48 yards rushing on 15 carries. Trever Ryen had a nice all-around game for the Cardinal team, picking up 19 yards on the ground and grabbing four receptions for 56 yards.
Defensively, Bobby McMillen had the lone takeaway, picking off a pass late in the first half. Jay Jones, who moved to cornerback in the spring, had five tackles for the Cardinal squad, while Brian Mills also had five stops, including two sacks. Jordan Harris and Gabe Luna were the top tacklers in the game, finishing with six stops each for the Gold defense.
The first-team offense scored on the opening drive of the game as Lanning led the Cardinal team down the field for a field goal on a nine-play, 53-yard drive that resulted in a Cole Netten kick from 34 yards out.
The defense controlled the rest of the half until backup quarterback Kyle Kempt led the Gold team on a six-play, 46-yard drive that resulted in a 52-yard field goal by Chris Francis as time expired. Kempt was 3-for-4 passing for 36 yards on the drive, which included an 18-yard strike to redshirt freshman Hakeem Butler.
The Gold team went in front 6-3 after Sage Rosenfels beat out Seneca Wallace in a quarterback competition between the Cyclone legends at the half.
The Cyclones open the first season of the Campbell era on Sept. 3 against UNI.
