AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team made an addition to its roster Thursday, as outside hitter Genesis Miranda will transfer from Evansville to ISU. The Puerto Rican will enroll in summer school, have two years of eligibility remaining and will be eligible to play for the Cyclones in 2016.
“We are really looking forward to having Genesis join our program,” Iowa State head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch said. “She is a very experienced, and talented all-around player. I have really enjoyed getting to know Genesis, she is a bright, positive young woman who wants to play at the highest level she can.”
Miranda was a crucial player for the Purple Aces in her two seasons at Evansville. She finished her sophomore season in 2015 with a team-high and UE single-season record 493 kills at 4.25 per set, ranking second in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) and 31st in the NCAA in both categories.
“She carried a big load offensively for her team last year, and I believe she has the makings of a great Big 12-pin hitter,” Johnson-Lynch noted.
An All-Missouri Valley Second Team selection in 2015, the Puerto Rican comes to Ames with 821 career kills and 63 career service aces after leading UE in both categories the past two seasons. A six-rotation outside hitter for the Purple Aces, Miranda also racked up 454 digs and 133 total blocks in her first two collegiate seasons.
From Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, Miranda has played for the Puerto Rico Senior National Team, as well as stints with the U20 and U18 Puerto Rico teams. In 2013, she led her high school, Colegio Carmel Sol, to the NORCECA High School Championship and was a finalist for the Puerto Rico High School Player of the Year.
“We have a wonderful Puerto Rican Student Association at Iowa State,” Johnson-Lynch stated. “Genesis will feel very comfortable and supported here both on and off the court.”
