STILLWATER, Okla. – The Iowa State tennis team came up short Thursday at the Big 12 Championships, falling to Kansas State, 4-0, at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The Cyclones finish their season 14-10 overall, while Kansas State improves to 11-13 overall.
The eighth-seeded Cyclones found themselves in an early hole after dropping the doubles point to the Wildcats. KSU, which was the nine seed, clinched the point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 doubles. Carolina Costamagna and Livia Cirnu earned the first win for KSU by defeating ISU's Regina Espindola and Ana Gasparovic, 6-0. The point was secured at No. 2 doubles when the Kansas State duo of Palma Juhasz and Sara Castellano beat Alejandra Galvis and Annabella Bonadonna, 6-1.
In singles action, ISU was forced to shift its lineup around with a leg injury slowing Sami Budai. Budai participated at No. 1 doubles, but was clearly hobbled and unable to participate in singles play.
Kansas State made it a 2-0 lead when Cirnu defeated Liera Bender, 6-1, 6-3, at No. 6 singles. The lead grew to 3-0 with Costamagna beating Espindola, 6-1, 6-2. The Wildcats clinched the match at the top singles slot when Castellano beat ISU's Liza Buss, 7-5, 6-2. Buss was playing up from her normal No. 2 singles spot.
