AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State football team held its final scrimmage this morning in preparation for the 2016 Cyclone Gridiron Club Spring Game next Saturday.
Iowa State head football coach
Matt Campbell was hoping to see improvement from his team since spring practice began on March 8. Campbell was pleased with the effort he witnessed this morning.
“It was a physical scrimmage,” Campbell said. “Defensively, we are ahead of our offense right now, but I think we should be. There were some really good things that showed up today. For about a third of the scrimmage I thought the defense played at a high rate and the offense started a little slow. But the offense came on late, and that can be attributed to
Joel Lanning, who really came on. It was great see some leadership out of him.”
Iowa State defensive coordinator
Jon Heacock has had 12 practices to work with his new Cyclone unit. As the defensive coordinator at Toledo the last two seasons, his Rocket defenses were known for creating turnovers.
His Cyclone defense continued the trend this morning by rustling up their share of turnovers.
“We had a lot of energy today, and I was really pleased with the improvement we have made since last Saturday's scrimmage,” Heacock said. “Our energy was better and we got a few turnovers, which is critical to win games. I just thought the attitude and effort was better from our guys today.”
As Campbell noted, the offense also had its share of highlights, too. Iowa State offensive coordinator
Tom Manning, who also commands the Cyclone offensive line, saw some positives from his offense.
“We did some situational football today with the opportunity to get the ball in the red zone and have a chance to test our team in some two-minute drills,” Manning said. “Obviously, we didn't do everything perfect, which one would expect at this time, but I saw a lot of guys going out there competing. Our execution and alignment assignment is greatly improving. I am happy with what the kids have been doing and proud of the progress they are making.”
The 2016 Cyclone Gridiron Club Spring Game is next Saturday (April 16) in Jack Trice Stadium. Kickoff is at 1 p.m. and admission is free.
