AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team and head coach
Tony Minatta announced its 2016 schedule Wednesday. The Cyclones will face five teams during the regular season that earned bids to the 2015 NCAA Soccer Tournament.
“We believe that we have put together a schedule which continues to allow our athletes to compete against top level programs during non-conference games, that will both challenge and prepare them for Big 12 play,” Minatta said. “We are excited to be able to play opponents like Florida and Auburn who were both ranked top-10 nationally last season, as it gives us the opportunity to not only see where we are at, but also, where we want to be.”
Iowa State will square off against Mississippi State in an exhibition game in Ames, Iowa. The Cyclones will officially open the regular season at Florida, which reached the Sweet 16 last season. Iowa State will return home to face the South Dakota State Jackrabbits on August 21st at 1 p.m. The Jackrabbits also made last year's NCAA Tournament field.
The Cyclones will travel for a three-game road swing with games at Creighton, Auburn and a neutral site game against Georgia before traveling home to face Iowa on September 9th at 7 p.m. to kick off the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
Big 12 Conference play kicks off for the Cyclones with a two-game road swing at Oklahoma State on September 23rd at 7 p.m. and on September 25th at Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Iowa State will return home for a five-game home stand against Oklahoma, TCU, West Virginia, Texas and in-state foe Drake. Iowa State's game against Drake will serve as Senior Night. The Cyclones will cap off the regular season on the road against Baylor, UNI and Kansas.
