AMES, Iowa – Iowa State Director of Men's and Women's Track and Cross Country Martin Smith will be inducted into the 2016 Roy Griak Invitational Hall of Fame, the University of Minnesota announced. Smith and his seven fellow inductees will be honored during the 31st annual Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 24.
Smith is the third Cyclone to earn induction to the Roy Griak Invitational Hall of Fame. In last year's inaugural class, long-time head coach Bill Bergan and All-American Kiel Uhl were both among the inductees.
During Smith's tenures across Iowa State, Wisconsin and Oklahoma, he has helped guide his teams to seven team titles at the Roy Griak Invitational, and has also overseen two individual champions at the Griak. During his time as head coach of the Badgers, Smith led the Wisconsin men's program to the first three team titles in Roy Griak Invitational history from 1986-88. His 1988 UW squad went on to be NCAA Champions.
Wrapping up his third season directing the Cyclone men's program, Smith has the Iowa State men positioned to do big things in 2016. The ISU men have finished in the top-four of the Big 12 Championships and the top-five of the NCAA Midwest Regional in each of the past three seasons, and have a young core of talent ready to shine, which will feature 2016 USATF Cross Country Junior national champion Thomas Pollard, 2015 All-Midwest Region Nathan Rodriguez and 2014 NCAA Cross Country qualifier Dan Curts.
