AMES, Iowa – Former Iowa State football star Ellis Hobbs remembers the play vividly.
Clinging to a 17-13 lead over Miami (Ohio) with under two minutes remaining in the 2004 Independence Bowl, the Cyclones needed a big defensive stop.
Iowa State had leaned on its All-Big 12 senior lockdown corner all season and this was another huge opportunity for Hobbs to step up.
He did.
Hobbs proceeded to pick off a Josh Betts pass and returned it 41 yards to the Miami 11-yard line with 0:55 seconds left remaining. Game over.
It was these types of plays in which Hobbs is best remembered for, cementing his legacy as one of the best defensive backs in Iowa State history.
Hobbs talked about this play, a number of Cyclone memories and his NFL career in our latest CyCast.
