The No. 17 Iowa State women's cross country team started the 2016 season on Friday at the Hawkeye Invitational by putting together a 3-3-1 record in seven head-to-head duals.
Head coach Andrea Grove-McDonough's squad boasted two top-10 finishers overall at the meet, despite the fact that all five runners in the ISU line-up were making their collegiate debut. With most of Iowa State's line-up sitting out the season-opening event, some underclassmen got a chance to show they can provide the Cyclones with depth as the season progresses.
Grace Gibbons, a redshirt freshman, was Iowa State's top performer, as she crossed the finish line second in a time of 10:20.8. The Gilbert, Iowa, native, who was running in the first cross country race of her collegiate career, finished less than a half second behind the first-place finisher in Iowa's Tess Wilberding.
Gibbons was followed by Jasmine Staebler, another redshirt freshman making her collegiate cross country debut. Staebler, a Guttenberg, Iowa, native, finished seventh with a time of 10:29.2. Erinn Stenman-Fahey was the third Cyclone across the finish line, with a 16th-place time of 10:38.4.
Iowa State's lone true freshman made her collegiate debut in the Cardinal and Gold by clocking a 10:52.3, good for 31st place. The Cyclone scoring effort was rounded out by redshirt freshman Megan Schott, who finished 46th in a atime of 11:08.6.
