AMES, Iowa – Iowa State picked up its first win of 2016 and the Matt Campbell Era with a 44-10 defeat of San Jose State Saturday in front of 50,851 at Jack Trice Stadium. ISU improves to 1-3 on the season, while SJSU is now also 1-3.
The Iowa State offense was able to cash in with 23 points off of four San Jose State turnovers, all interceptions by the Cyclone defense. Five different Cyclones found the end zone, with Mike Warren getting his first TD of the season and freshman Deshaunte Jones getting his first two touchdown receptions of his ISU career. One of those came from Jacob Park, who recorded the first three touchdown passes of his Cyclone career.
Keys to the Game
Head coach Matt Campbell had a crucial decision on ISU's first drive of the game, as he decided to go for it on 4th and 1 on the SJSU 25. The moved paid off as Mike Warren rushed for three, and a first down. Two plays later, the Cyclones hit paydirt as Joel Lanning found Allen Lazard in the back corner of the end zone. The call was originally ruled incomplete, but a review showed the junior wideout was able to get a toe down in-bounds, giving ISU a 7-0 advantage.
After the Spartans pushed all the way to the Cyclone one-yard line on the next drive, the ISU defense came up with a pair of big stops as Kamari Cotton-Moya and Brian Mills came up with stops on respective plays for force as San Jose State field goal and keep ISU ahead, 7-3.
The Cyclones were reliant on the pass in the first half, tossing for 158 in the first 30 minutes. However, it was the ground game that got the second TD of the game as Mike Warren punched one in from two yards out to make it 17-3 Cyclones. Jacob Park picked up his first career touchdown pass to wrap up the first half, finding Dondre Daley for a 23-yard score to make it 23-3 ISU.
Iowa State wasted no time getting back into the swing of things offensively, with Joel Lanning connecting with Deshaunte Jones for the freshman wideout's first career score to make it 30-3 Cyclones. Jones got his second score of the day on a bubble screen in the early portions of the fourth quarter to make it 37-10 ISU. Trever Ryen made it 44-10 with a touchdown reception of his own from Park.
Players of Note…
Kamari Cotton-Moya had a big game defensively, recording seven tackles in the first quarter, including two on the crucial goal-line stand that held SJSU to a field goal. He would finish the game with 11 tackles. He also recorded his first career interception, grabbling Nigel Tribune's deflected pass in the third quarter.
Brian Mills also impressed, recording six tackles, 2.5 for loss, a sack and a forced fumble.
As for the quarterbacks, Joel Lanning had a big impact in his limited work, going 5-of-8 for 136 yards and a pair of scores. Jacob Park went 15-of-19 with 165 yards and three touchdown passes, while also adding a career-best 35-yard run in the second quarter.
