AMES, Iowa – No. 13 Baylor used a 19-yard field goal from Chris Callahan as time expired to defeat Iowa State, 45-42, Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in Big 12 action. Baylor remains undefeated at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
Keys of the Game
The Cyclones held a 42-28 lead through three quarters but the Bears rushing attack proved too much in the end. Baylor rushed for 469 yards on the ground, including 237 from junior Shock Linwood, while piling up 647 yards of total offense.
The Cyclones' offensive attack was nearly flawless in its own right through three quarters. Iowa State started the game 10-of-11 on third and fourth down, but was only able to convert 1-of-6 third downs in the final quarter of the game.
The Cyclones finished with 465 yards of offense, but just seven yards in the fourth quarter as Baylor scored the final 17 points of the game to earn the victory.
Players of Note...
Joel Lanning was 17-for-23 passing for 261 yards and two touchdown strikes. The redshirt junior signal caller also picked up 57 yards on the ground a rushing TD. Mike Warren had 130 yards on a season-high 30 carries.
Lanning connected with freshman Deshaunte Jones and sophomore Carson Epps for scores through the air. The pass to Jones was a 43-yard strike that got the scoring started on the Cyclones' first drive. It was Jones' third touchdown reception in the last two games.
Epps grabbed a Lanning pass in the third quarter and out-sprinted the Baylor defense for the 46-yard score.
Trever Ryen had five catches for a career-best 75 yards.
On the defensive side of the ball, Evrett Edwards led the way with 13 tackles and Willie Harvey added 12. Harvey had a career-high three tackles for a loss.
