AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State men's cross country team made their 2016 debut in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) national rankings on Tuesday, as the No. 15 team in the country. This marks the highest ranking for the Iowa State men since Oct. 14, 2008, when they were the No. 11 team in the nation.
It is the program's first appearance in the top 25 since ISU was slotted No. 25 on Sept. 1, 2015
Iowa State's women's squad also remains in the national rankings, as they have been all season, at No. 23. Iowa State is one of 16 schools in the country to have both their men's and women's teams ranked in the USTFCCCA top 25. The short-handed ISU women managed to finish 14th at the Griak Invitational, led by a 10th place finish from Perez Rotich.
The Cyclone men earned their way into the national rankings with a coming-out party of sorts over the weekend at the prestigious Roy Griak Invitational. The Cyclones finished second as a team in a talented field that included eight nationally ranked squads.
It took a team effort at the Griak meet, as the Cyclones employed the pack running strategy that ISU Director of Track and Cross Country Martin Smith is known so well for teaching and utilizing when needed. The five Iowa State scorers all finished within five seconds and seven placings of each other.
Junior Toby Hardwick was the first ISU runner across the line, finishing 17th in a time of 25:33. However, a flurry of Cyclone teammates were on his heals, as redshirt freshman Thomas Pollard and true freshman Andrew Jordan, placed 18th and 19th respectively, with matching times of 25:34. Next up was sophomore Josef Andrews (20th – 25:35) and senior Kevyn Hoyos (23rd – 25:38) to round out the ISU scoring effort.
Additionally, sophomore John Nownes and freshman Sam Clausnitzer also ran for the Cyclones at Les Bolstad Cross Country Course. Nownes came up with a strong showing, finishing 46th in a time of 25:57, while Clausnitzer, who also ran the season-opening Hawkeye Invitational clocked a 26:43 to finish 102nd.
