NORMAN, Oklahoma – A career-best day from Deonte Burton helped push Iowa State past Oklahoma, 92-87 in double overtime Saturday afternoon at the Lloyd Noble Center. The win, which snapped a two-game Cyclone skid, moves ISU to 12-6 overall and 4-3 in Big 12 play. Oklahoma is now 8-10 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
Burton led the way with a career-high 31 points, one of five Cyclones in double figures. Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored 20 points, joining ISU's 1,000-career point club in the process. Also in double figures was Monté Morris (19), Matt Thomas (11) and Donovan Jackson (10).
Iowa State found itself down by 19 points in the first half before going on a 21-1 run to get ahead prior to halftime. The Cyclones then had to erase an eight-point second half deficit to ensure an extra five minutes to decide the contest. That turned out to not be enough either, as Mitrou-Long brought ISU back from six down with 1:30 to go and to a second extra period, which Burton and Jackson were the stars of to bring home the win for ISU.
How it Happened
Iowa State could get nothing going from the field early, as the Cyclones were just 1-of-8 from the field in the first five minutes of action. Oklahoma countered that with 12-straight points to open up a 14-2 advantage. ISU made just one of its first six 3-point shots, while OU made 3-of-4 in the same period as the lead ballooned to 20-5.
The Cyclone effort, on both sides of the ball, started to come together in the latter stages of the first 20 minutes. OU moved ahead at 28-9, but were kept off the board for over four minutes as ISU went on a 19-1 run to get back down by just one point at 29-28. Iowa State got its first lead at 30-29 when Monté Morris drained a contested 17-footer with 1:30 to go in the half.
OU responded to begin the second half, with the return of the foul-troubled Jordan Woodard helping get the home side back in front and moving ahead by as many as eight points at 51-43. Deonte Burton guided the comeback, as he hit back-to-back 3-pointers and posted a steal and dunk to push the visitors back ahead at 55-54.
The Sooners clawed back ahead briefly, but Morris tied things back up at the line, 63-63, with four minutes to play. OU pushed back ahead at 67-63, but Nazareth Mitrou-Long cleared that out on his own to knot it back up at 67-67 with 1:35 to play. Oklahoma moved back ahead 69-67 at the free throw line with 47 seconds to play, but Burton thundered down a dunk to tie it and force overtime.
OU got up by six at 78-72, but Mitrou-Long came to the rescue again, getting an old-fashioned three-point play, a steal and then a transition 3-pointer to knot the game at 78-78 with a minute to go. ISU forced a shot clock violation to get the last shot of overtime, but Deonte Burton's 3-pointer at the top of the key rimmed out for a second overtime.
Burton and Donovan Jackson each hit 3-pointers early in the second OT to get ISU ahead 84-80. Two Burton free throws made is a six-point game, but OU hung on and cut the ISU lead to 87-84 with 23 seconds to go. A Jackson free throw made it a two-possession game, and ISU sowed it up when Burton got a steal and drained a pair at the line to get ahead for good.
