AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's defense stood tall in holding the Kansas offense to just 106 yards en route to a 45-0 win Saturday afternoon at Jack Trice Stadium. The Cyclones improve to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in Big 12 action, while Kansas drops to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
The Cyclones have scored 38 or more points in five of six games this season.
Keys of the Game
Iowa State's defense didn't allow the Jayhawk's offensive unit across midfield until nearly midway through the fourth quarter. The shutout of the Jayhawks was ISU's first under Matt Campbell and the fourth-ever against a Big 12 opponent. The 106 yards were the fewest allowed by a Cyclone defense since holding UNI to 99 yards in 2004.
The Cyclones forced a pair of turnovers, a Kamari Cotton-Moya interception and a Trever Ryen fumble recovery on special teams, to set the tone early in the game. ISU's defensive unit also had seven tackles for a loss, including 2.5 by Joel Lanning.
Ryen had a monster game for the Cyclones on special teams. In addition to the fumble recovery, the senior also downed a pair of punts inside the five and returned a punt 68 yards for a touchdown to give ISU a 14-0 edge late in the first quarter.
Players of Note….
David Montgomery scored a career-high three rushing touchdowns while picking up 68 yards on 21 carries. Montgomery's scoring runs came twice from four yards and once from the one-yard line.
Kyle Kempt, making his second start, was 13-for-20 for 122 yards and an eight-yard touchdown pass to Marchie Murdock, who scored for the fourth time in six games. Allen Lazard was ISU's leading receiver, finishing with three receptions for 40 yards. Lazard now has a school-record 200 career receptions.
Kempt and backup Zeb Noland connected with 10 different receivers as ISU beat Kansas for the third-straight time and seventh in the last eight meetings.
Defensively it was Lanning again leading the way 10 tackles, his third game with double-digit stops this season. Lanning played 58 total snaps (defense 39; special teams 10; offense 9).
