COLUMBIA, Missouri – Iowa State opened the 2017-18 season with a 74-59 loss at Missouri Friday night at Mizzou Arena. ISU is 0-1 on the season, while the Tigers are 1-0.
The Cyclone effort was led by 14 points from Nick Weiler-Babb, all of which came in the second half. A pair of ISU debutants joined the returning Weiler-Babb in double figures, with Zoran Talley, Jr. posting 11 points, while Lindell Wigginton had 10.
The Cyclones found themselves behind the whole way, as they shot just 10-of-32 (31.3 percent) from the field in the first half. ISU came out of the locker room strong in the second half to quickly cut the Tigers' lead to single digits, but Missouri's hot-shooting night helped bring them to the win.
How It Happened
It took just over three minutes for ISU to open its account for the season, with Jeff Beverly getting the first bucket on a transition lay-in. The Cyclones struggled to get the scoreboard moving, only hitting two of their first 14 shots as Mizzou raced out to a 14-4 lead. ISU's shooting woes were demonstrated with ISU missing its first six 3-point attempts, and the backcourt duo of Donovan Jackson and Lindell Wigginton combining to go just 1-of-13 in the first half.
Down 14 to start the second half, ISU got right to work and within the first 2:30, brought the Mizzou lead down to single digits, with Nick Weiler-Babb scoring seven in that stretch after being shut out in the first half. The momentum was short lived, as the Tigers went on a 10-0 run to get back ahead by 18 points at 57-39.
The Tigers made 10 3-pointers in the game, and continued to give the sold-out crowd reasons to cheer as they would balloon the lead to as many as 22 points during the second half en route to the win.
Players of Note
