IRVING, Texas – Twenty-two members of the Iowa State football team have been named to the 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Conference teams, announced today by the Big 12 Conference.
Iowa State's 22 Academic All-Big 12 recipients is eight more than a year ago and the most since 2000.
Fourteen Cyclones earned first-team honors, including Jake Campos, who was a first-team honoree for the third time in his career.
Other Cyclones to receive first-team recognition were: Chase Allen, Spencer Benton, Jason Bowman, Colin Downing, Chris Francis, Robby Garcia, Julian Good-Jones, Sam Harms, Bryce Meeker, D'Andre Payne, Quinn Sonntag, J.D. Waggoner and Steve Wirtel.
Allen was among 10 players honored with a 4.00 GPA.
Eight Cyclones received second-team honors: Landen Akers, Mackenro Alexander, Carson Epps, Kyle Kempt, Carson Lensing, Trever Ryen, Marcel Spears and Mike Warren.
In order to be awarded with first-team honors, a student-athlete must maintain a GPA of 3.20 or higher, while participating in 60 percent of the games. Second-team honors are awarded to the student-athletes who maintained a GPA of 3.00 or higher.
Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and met all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
