WACO, Texas – Iowa State won its fourth road game in five tries on Saturday, knocking off Baylor, 23-13. The Cyclones held the Bears to three second-half points and forced two turnovers to clinch the victory.
Sophomore running back David Montgomery piled up 158 yards of total offense, including 144 on the ground to lead the Cyclones. With the win, Iowa State improves to 7-4 overall and 5-3 in Big 12 play. Baylor drops to 1-10 overall and 1-7 in conference action.
Senior receiver Allen Lazard continued to re-write the Iowa State record book, as he broke Todd Blythe's career receiving yards record with 3,123 and tied ISU single-season mark for touchdown receptions with nine.
Keys of the Game…
The Cyclones took their first lead of the game late in the first half on a one-play drive, as freshman quarterback Zeb Noland unleashed a shot downfield, finding Hakeem Butler. The junior made a spectacular one-handed catch before brushing off a pair of would-be tacklers to find pay dirt for a 66-yard touchdown reception.
Iowa State was clinging to a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter, with Baylor driving and just yards away from tying the game, when Brian Peavy made perhaps the biggest play of the game. On first down from the Iowa State two yard-line, Peavy met Bear running back John Lovett in the backfield and tore the ball from his arms, flipping possession back to the Cyclones.
With 7:01 to play, senior placekicker Garrett Owens drilled a 45-yard field goal into the wind, extending Iowa State's lead to 23-13. The Iowa State defense stood tall once again on the ensuing Baylor drive. With the Bears knocking on the door at the Iowa State 25 yard line, senior defensive back Reggie Wilkerson picked of BU quarterback Charlie Brewer and returned it 31 yards to the ISU 38.
The Cyclones were able to run the clock out from there behind Montgomery, Sheldon Croney Jr. and Joel Lanning, coming away from McLane Stadium with a 23-13 victory.
Players of Note….
Montgomery rushed for 144 yards on the day. It was his sixth 100-yard rushing performance of the season, tying him for 8th on the Iowa State single-season list.
Noland was 14-of-28 for 180 yards and two touchdowns in the first start of his career under center.
Peavy led the way defensively with 10 tackles (9 solo), two tackles for loss, a pass break-up and a forced fumble.
Lanning ended the game with four tackles and a sack, while running seven times for 27 yards, helping Iowa State ice the contest late in the fourth quarter.
