AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (15-9, 7-5 Big 12) defeated Oklahoma (8-16, 2-10 Big 12), 80-64 Saturday night in Hilton Coliseum.
The Cyclones exploded with a 21-4 run in the second half to break open a tie contest en route to their sixth-straight win over the Sooners in Hilton Coliseum.
Nazareth Mitrou-Long led the Cyclones with 23 points, burying five 3-pointers on his way to the ninth 20-point scoring game of his career. Solomon Young, in his first career start, scored eight points on 4-of-5 shooting and Monte' Morris had 13 points, nine assists and zero turnovers.
Iowa State made 12 3-pointers, the 12th-straight game of drilling nine or more treys, and committed a season-low four turnovers in the contest.
The Cyclones swept the Sooners for only fifth time since 1967.
How it Happened
Iowa State started strong, holding a 28-20 lead with 7:25 left in the first half after Matt Thomas buried a 3-pointer. The Sooners then countered with a 9-0 run to mount their first lead of the game at 29-28. The Cyclones had a stretch where they were 2-of-16 from the field to help the Sooners go out in front.
The Cyclones then scored the final 10 points of the half to go into the break with a 38-29 lead. Mitrou-Long ended the drought with a trey, followed by a Thomas 3-pointer and hoops from Nick Weiler-Babb and Morris.
Mitrou-Long had 14 first-half points to pace the Cyclones.
It didn't take long for the Sooners to catch up. OU made 5-of-8 to begin the second half in a 12-3 run, knotting the score at 41-all with 15:48 remaining.
The Cyclones then had an answer, going on a 15-2 run to go out in front 56-43 with 10:29 remaining. Mitrou-Long ended the run with a trey and a drive to the hoop to push the Cyclones back up by double digits.
Moments later, Young scored a couple baskets down low, and suddenly the ISU lead ballooned to 17 points (62-45) with 7:34 left.
The Cyclones held their largest lead at 68-48 with six minutes remaining.
Players of Note
Naz Mitrou-Long had his stroke this evening, scoring 23 points on 5-of-11 shooting from 3-point range. He also had six rebounds and three steals. He now has 64 3-pointers on the year to tie for 19th in school history. He is the only player in school history to rank in ISU's season 3-pointers made top-20 three times.
Solomon Young was fantastic in his first career start, tallying eight points on 4-of-5 shooting. He was extremely active on defense as well, blocking two shots. It was his highest point total vs. Big 12 competition.
