AMES, Iowa – Iowa State guard Monté Morris has been named to the 2017 Good Works Team presented by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and Allstate. Morris is one of five student-athletes selected to the Division I team, which shines a light on things accomplished off the court.
Morris was one of 181 men's nominees submitted to the NABC. The nominees were narrowed down to the final players selected by voting panels led by former Duke University guard, two-time NCAA champion and seven-time NBA All-Star Grant Hill.
Morris and the other members of the Allstate NABC Good Works Team will be invited by Allstate to be recognized at the 2017 NABC Convention, the 2017 NCAA Men's Final Four and will participate in a community service project to benefit Phoenix.
In addition to dedicating countless hours to their studies and athletics, the members of this year's team have spent their limited free time bettering communities all over the world and demonstrating a strong commitment to improving the lives of others.
Morris, a Flint, Michigan native, has not only made an impact on the court for Iowa State, he's been an influencing factor in the community. His reach has touched both Ames and Iowa State University, as well as his hometown of Flint.
Last February, Morris took to social media to ask his followers to consider donating to help his hometown during its recent water crisis. Morris asked fans to make a small donation, but an Iowa-based grocery chain, Hy-Vee, went one step further. Hy-Vee donated 11 semi trucks of bottled and gallon water and delivered it to Flint on Morris' behalf.
When Morris has the opportunity to get back to Flint, he takes it upon himself to make an impact in the community. He has spent time talking to foster children and always makes a trip to his old high school to speak to the football team during their practices, since he is rarely able to make it back during the basketball season. He has also has volunteered at Mateen Cleaves "One Goal, One Passion" Basketball Camp.
In Ames and Central Iowa, Morris has taken part in the Miracle League of Ankeny, as well as the Wounded Warriors Foundation. Morris has also visited Blank Children's Hospital in Des Moines and Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames. One of his favorite activities is bowling with competitors from the Special Olympics.
Among other activities, Morris has spent time talking to local schools via Skype and FaceTime about being a Division I student-athlete and the importance of taking care of your academics.
