URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (15-5, 1-3 Big 12) fell to No. 15 Baylor (14-5, 2-2 Big 12) in a hard-fought 4-0 loss on Friday.
The Cyclones dug themselves an early hole after dropping the doubles point and couldn't work their way back into the match.
Sami Budai was defeated in a tough match to Blair Shankle, who is ranked No. 4 in the nation, 3-6, 0-6. Budai had a 3-2 lead in the first set before Shankle proved why she is one of the nation's top players.
Regina Espindola and Erin Freeman also lost their matches, which gave Baylor the 4-0 win.
Maty Cancini and Margarita Timakova played well for Iowa State in their singles matches, but did not finish due to the match being decided. Cancini was up in the second set 7-5, 3-1 and Timakova was ahead 6-3, 1-2.
Iowa State will be back on the courts against No. 21 Texas on Sunday at Life Time Fitness. Singles play will be crucial for the Cyclones when Texas comes to Urbandale. Three Longhorns are ranked in the top-100 in singles. The match against Texas will be at 10 A.M.
