IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State senior men's golfer Nick Voke made history Sunday afternoon by earning medalist honors at the Hawkeye Invitational with a 54-hole 207 total.
Voke's victory was the fourth of his career, tying All-American Scott Fernandez (2012-15) for the most individual tournament titles by a Cyclone.
Iowa State finished fourth in the team race at 868. No. 11 Texas Tech was the champion at 855.
A native off Auckland, New Zealand, Voke held the 36-hole lead by two shots after posting a 68 and 67 in the first two rounds. Voke's lead evaporated when he suffered back-to-back bogeys on holes 10 and 11 in the third round. However, Voke regrouped by registering pars on the next four holes before ringing the bell with back-to-back birdies on No. 16 and No 17.
Voke's 2-under finish on the last eight holes helped him post a final-round 72 and hold off Texas Tech's Hurly Long by two strokes.
Voke's win was the third by a Cyclone at the Hawkeye Invitational since 2012: Nate McCoy (2012), Ruben Sondjaja (2016). Voke now has 17 career top-10 finishes, the third-most in school history.
ISU has had five golfers win individual titles 13 times since Andrew Tank began his tenure as the Cyclone golf coach in 2010. Voke joins Denzel Ieremia as Cyclones to win a tournament this season.
Ieremia had a fantastic final round, carding a 69 to jump into a tie for 21st in the medalist race at 218. Ieremia had five birdies this afternoon.
Senior Ruben Sondjaja tied for 26th at 219 (75-70-74).
The Cyclones are back in action at the Big 12 Championships, April 24-26 in Hutchinson, Kan.
