Cyclone Headlines
- The Iowa State softball team (16-30, 1-11 Big 12) will travel to Iowa City on Tuesday to face in-state rival Iowa (14-24, 7-7 Big Ten) at the Hawkeye Softball Complex. First pitch of the Cy-Hawk showdown is set for 6 p.m.
-Iowa State is 41-34-2 all-time vs. Iowa in a series that dates back to 1975. The Cyclones defeated the Hawkeyes in a 5-0 shutout victory last season at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The win allowed ISU to retain the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series trophy.
-The Cyclones will look to build off their first Big 12 win of the season after handing Oklahoma State its first conference loss in the series finale, a 10-9 walk-off thriller. Freshman Megan Schweitzer stole home in the bottom of the seventh to break a 9-9 tie and defeat the Cowgirls.
-Junior Kelsey McFarland provided the highlight of the game, crushing her first grand slam of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning. The shot gave Iowa State its first lead of the series, and was McFarland's third dinger of the year.
-Freshman Sami Williams continued her emergence with a big series vs. OSU. Williams went 4-of-10 at the plate with two home runs, four RBI's, a double and five runs scored.
-Williams has piled up a team-best .378 batting average in 12 games of Big 12 play this season. The Laguna Niguel, Calif., native currently leads the conference in doubles with 15, and is just one away from tying the current single-season school record. Williams leads ISU in RBIs (27), doubles (17), home runs (7) and runs scored (28). Her 15 doubles rank No. 1 among all NCAA freshmen.
-McFarland's junior campaign has been outstanding thus far. The New Prague, Minn. native ranks No. 88 nationally and No. 4 in the Big 12 with a .400 batting average. McFarland leads the team with 56 hits and has stolen 10 bases in 42 games, after stealing one all of last season. McFarland went 4-for-8 with an RBI and a run in two games vs. Nebraska.
-On 14 different occasions this season, Iowa State has started four freshmen. Sami Williams (2B), Logan Schaben (SS), Talyn Lewis (3B) have been regulars starting in the infield. Megan Schweitzer has garnered the starting nod both as a designated player and in the outfield.
-The Cyclones are on pace to break the single-season school record for stolen bases. Despite returning just 12 steals from a season ago, the 2017 Cyclones already rank 2nd on the single-season list with 85, led by 20 for Cathlin Bingham, who ranks No. 2 in the Big 12. The current single-season team record is 89 (2013).
-Junior Kaila Konz had strong performances in Waco, Texas vs. No. 13 Baylor. Konz went 4-for-10 at the plate, with the first homer of her career on an inside-the-park score in game one of the series. Konz also stole a base and scored three of Iowa State's seven runs on the weekend.
