NORMAN, Okla. – The Iowa State tennis team saw its season come to an end with a 4-1 loss to Kansas State Thursday at the Big 12 Championships. The Cyclones finish with a 15-11 record, posting back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in more than 40 seasons.
Kansas State (12-14) opened the match by earning the doubles point with wins at the top-2 spots, both of which came by scores of 6-4.
Freshman Maty Cancini was the only Cyclone to earn a win, despite several matches being closely contested. Cancini defeated Millie Stretton, 6-3, 6-1, at the No. 2 slot to keep the Cyclones alive, trailing 3-1.
The match was clinched when K-State's Livia Cirnu defeated Annabella Bonadonna, 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 6 spot.
The match signifies the end of the careers of Sami Budai and Natalie Phippen. Budai recorded one of the best careers in Iowa State history, ranking second with 141 total career wins. Her 76 career doubles wins are tied for the school record.
