AMES, Iowa – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced their regional preseason rankings on Monday. In the Midwest region, the men's team comes in at No. 2, while the women's team is slated No. 4 to begin the year.
The Cyclone men will be chasing No. 1 ranked Oklahoma State, who fended off Iowa State to win the Big 12 Championship last season. For the women, Missouri comes in at No. 1, followed by No. 2 Minnesota and No. 3 Oklahoma State.
Both squads are coming off of NCAA Championship births in 2016. Martin Smith's team had a historic run last season, posting a 16th place finish at the national meet, which was its best since 1997. A runner-up finish at the Big 12 Championships was a catalyst to their postseason success.
Andrea Grove-McDonough's team captured its fifth Big 12 Championship in six years in Lubbock last season. The women went on to race to a third-place finish at the NCAA Regional before qualifying at-large for the NCAA Championship. In Terre Haute, the Cyclone women brought home 29th place as a team.
Both teams open the season at the Hawkeye Invitational on Friday. The women's race will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men's race at 6:45 p.m.
